The BLM, which is a part of the Department of the Interior, manages some 245 million acres of surface, as well as 700 million sub-surface acres of minerals mostly in the western US. Domestic production from over 63,000 Federal onshore oil and gas wells accounted for 11% of the nation’s natural gas supply and 5% of the oil supply. The sales value of the oil and gas produced from public lands exceeded $15.4 billion in 2004. In fiscal year 2008, $5.5 billion was paid to Federal and State governments for Federal onshore energy leasing and production. For oil and gas, half of this money goes to the states and half goes to the U.S. Treasury.
