Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement
BOEMRE, formerly known as the Minerals Management Service, manages the nation’s natural gas, oil and other mineral resources on the outer continental shelf. The offshore program, which manages the mineral resources on the OCS, is divided into three regions: Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific Ocean.
Effective October 1, 2011, the duties of the BOEMRE were split between the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.
It is among the top five revenue sources for the federal government.
